What is Reiki?

Reiki is a system of natural healing that involves channelling energy through the hands to promote good health and balance.

Reiki is a complementary healing practice that originated in Japan in the early 20th century. The word Reiki comes from two Japanese terms:

  • Rei = universal
  • Ki = life energy (similar to concepts like chi in Chinese medicine or prana in yoga)

What Reiki is

Reiki is based on the idea that a practitioner can help channel “life energy” to another person to support relaxation, balance, and well-being. It’s often used for stress reduction and emotional calm.

How is Reiki practiced

  • The recipient usually lies down fully clothed.
  • The practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body.
  • Sessions typically last 30–60 minutes.
  • The experience is often described as deeply relaxing; some people feel warmth, tingling, or calm.

What people use Reiki for

People commonly seek Reiki to help with:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Emotional healing
  • Relaxation and sleep
  • General sense of well-being
  • Support alongside medical treatment (not as a replacement)

Scientific perspective

  • Reiki is not proven to cure diseases.
  • Research suggests benefits may largely come from relaxation, placebo effects, and human touch.
  • Medical professionals generally view it as safe when used in addition to, not instead of, conventional care.

Is it religious? No. Reiki is spiritual but not religious. It doesn’t require specific beliefs, and people of many backgrounds practice or receive it

A Reiki session is usually described as gentle, calming, and deeply relaxing, though everyone’s experience is a little different. Here’s what people commonly report.

During the session

  • Deep relaxation – many people feel their body “let go,” similar to meditation or drifting toward sleep
  • Warmth or heat where the practitioner’s hands are placed
  • Tingling, pulsing, or light pressure sensations
  • Heaviness or lightness in different parts of the body
  • Slowed breathing and heart rate

Some people fall asleep, which is completely normal.

Emotional experiences

  • A sense of calm or peace
  • Emotional release (some people feel like crying or laughing afterward)
  • Feeling mentally “clearer” or less tense
  • Occasionally, emotions may surface briefly and then pass

Mental and visual sensations

  • Seeing colors, light, or images (especially if you’re imaginative or meditative)
  • Feeling “spaced out” or very present
  • A quiet mind, similar to guided relaxation

After the session

  • Feeling refreshed, lighter, or grounded
  • Improved mood or sleep that day
  • Mild tiredness or thirst (practitioners often suggest drinking water)
  • Effects can be subtle or noticeable right away, or build over time

Important to know

  • Some people feel very little physically, yet still report benefits later.
  • There’s no right or wrong way to experience Reiki.
  • It’s non-invasive and generally considered safe.
