The million-dollar question when you have sunburn can I get my regular massage?
❌If your sunburn is fresh or severe
Avoid massage if you have:
- Red, hot, painful skin
- Blisters or peeling
- Swelling or tenderness to touch
Massage can worsen inflammation, damage healing skin, and increase pain or risk of infection.
⚠️ If your sunburn is mild and healing
You may be able to get a very gentle massage, only if:
- The skin is no longer hot or painful
- There are no blisters
- Pressure is light (no deep tissue)
- The therapist avoids the burned areas or uses minimal touch
✅ Safer alternatives
- Massage unburned areas only
- Use cooling aftercare instead (aloe vera, fragrance-free moisturizer)
- Wait 3–7 days until redness and tenderness subside
Important tips
- Tell the massage therapist about the sunburn beforehand
- Avoid oils with fragrance, menthol, or essential oils on burned skin
- If the burn is blistered or very painful, skip massage until healed
